Enjoy a\nglass of wine as you tour t he exhibition with SVMoA’s curators. Free\nPlay considers the r elationship between design and creativity in\nsocial spaces dedicated to r ecreation and play. Inspired in part by artist\nIsamu Noguchi\, who believ ed in the power of social spaces to unite art and\nplay in order to build community\, the project will examine the way that\nartists\, architects an d designers have worked to create artistically\nthoughtful spaces for soci al interaction and engagement. There is a thread that runs through the city\nthat can be heard from the drumming at Congo Square in the 1700's through\nto today's vibrant music scene. The music of this city is a powerful form\nof expression. It was a vehicle to communicate a desire for freedom\,\nexpress frustration of the injustices of segregation and Jim Crow laws\, a\nhealing force that helped bring the city back from the devastation of\nHurricane Katrina\, and is still a vital form of expr ession against ongoing\ncultural &\; racial biases. Executive Producer Terence Blanchard and\nDirector Michael Murphy\, show how the culture of t he city is reflected in\nits music\, how music impacts culture\; and how e ven in the darkest of times\,\nmusic lifts and\nunites.
