In contrast\, the images in this exhibition\, which\n were made in Sun Valley\, Rhode Island\, and New York\, are more spontaneo us.\nBut like her later photographs\, these early works illuminate the sub tle\ninteractions and psychological tensions that occur among family and f riends\neven in moments of leisure – at weddings and on squash courts\, at the\nbeach\, waterpark\, or a ski race.
Born in Norfolk\, Virgin ia\, in 1970\,\nthe artist Rob Davis has spent the past six years making p aintings that\nmine his childhood memories – specifically those from age s five to eight\,\na time of “magical thinking” among children. His hy perrealist images\ndepict empty kitchen tables\, living rooms\, and porche s\; piles of records\nand plants in macrame holders. While Davis’s paint ings emerge from his\nown lived experience\, their investigation of the do mestic possesses\nuniversal resonance for all viewers\, particularly those familiar with the\n1970s.
