That Time I Knew I Belonged:
2025 Creative Expression Competition

“That Time I Knew I Belonged” is a creative expression competition sponsored by The Alliance of Idaho and the Sun Valley Museum of Art (SVMoA). The competition is open to high school juniors and seniors who attend Blaine County schools. Submissions may be in English or Spanish, and students who may be the first in their family to attend college are especially encouraged to participate.

The Alliance of Idaho and SVMoA invite students to respond to the prompt, “That time I knew I belonged…” Students should submit personal, autobiographical stories that explore moments of belonging, connection, and identity, or times when belonging felt just out of reach. Submissions may take the form of writing, visual art, or video, and should directly address the prompt while revealing something about what makes a community work—and about the moments when it doesn’t. What does it mean to belong? Where do you feel at home? When do you feel connected, comfortable, or at ease?

The Alliance and SVMoA are looking for originality, creativity, and emotional resonance in each submission. They share a commitment to building and celebrating communities in their many forms, from what happens on the soccer field to the dinner table, from the classroom to a dance class, from a walk in the woods to the pages of a book. Together, they believe diverse communities are stronger when everyone can flourish, and this competition is designed to recognize and honor the many ways people experience and create belonging.

Winners will be awarded a gift card to the independent or university bookstore of their choice to help students purchase books for college or technical school or to support a love of reading.

Three awards will be given—one $1000, one $500, and one $250.

Applicant must be a current high school junior or senior at a Blaine County School.

2026 Concurso De Expresión Creativa 2026

“Ese momento en que supe que pertenecía” es un concurso de expresión creativa patrocinado por The Alliance of Idaho y el Museo de Arte de Sun Valley (SVMoA). El concurso está abierto a estudiantes de penúltimo y último año de secundaria que asisten a escuelas del condado de Blaine. Las participaciones pueden ser en inglés o español, y se anima especialmente a participar a los estudiantes que sean los primeros en su familia en ir a la universidad.

The Alliance of Idaho y SVMoA invitan a los estudiantes a responder a la pregunta: “Ese momento en que supe que pertenecía…”. Los estudiantes deben presentar historias personales y autobiográficas que exploren momentos de pertenencia, conexión e identidad, o momentos en los que la pertenencia parecía inalcanzable. Las participaciones pueden ser en forma de texto, arte visual o video, y deben abordar directamente la pregunta, revelando algo sobre lo que hace que una comunidad funcione, y sobre los momentos en que no funciona. ¿Qué significa pertenecer? ¿Dónde te sientes como en casa? ¿Cuándo te sientes conectado, cómodo o a gusto?

The Alliance y SVMoA buscan originalidad, creatividad y resonancia emocional en cada participación. Comparten el compromiso de construir y celebrar las comunidades en sus diversas formas, desde lo que sucede en la cancha de fútbol hasta la mesa, desde el aula hasta una clase de baile, desde un paseo por el bosque hasta las páginas de un libro. Juntos, creen que las comunidades diversas son más fuertes cuando todos pueden prosperar, y este concurso está diseñado para reconocer y honrar las diversas maneras en que las personas experimentan y crean un sentido de pertenencia.
