Art on Film: Hard Twist: Through the Lens of Barbara Van Cleve

Wednesday, June 3, 2026 - 5:00 PM

Join SVMoA and Merlin's Magic Lantern for a screening of Hard Twist: Through the Lens of Barbara Van Cleve, a documentary portrait about the life of the famous western photographer, Barbara Van Cleve. Barbara is a fifth-generation Montanan with a century of family history going back to the early 1900s, when her family settled in the Crazy Mountain area. Upon their arrival in Montana, the Van Cleves began operating a dude ranch, where Barbara grew up and spent most of her summers as an adult.

Hard Twist follows Barbara’s storied career as it spans decades and acres, helping the world witness the camaraderie and sisterhood often overlooked in mainstream representations of ranchers. Using Barbara’s most iconic work and archival footage of the Lazy K Bar Ranch where she spent her youth, viewers will experience the West through Barbara’s eyes. She recounts how her family’s relationship to the land helped shape the artist she became, discusses Montana’s changing landscape and culture, and explores what it means to build an identity tied to open space.

As part of the screening, Felicitas Funke, the creative and executive producer and Wood River Valley local, will join us to talk about the film. The film is directed and produced by Cynthia Matty-Huber. Film Length: 1 hour 19 minutes.

This film screening takes place at Merlin's Magic Lantern, Ketchum, at 5pm.

This is part of a series of monthly screenings - SVMoA @ Merlin's Magic Lantern: Art on Film.
