Join ISU Geologist Paul Link for this superb walking tour and field trip, including four stops before the trailhead to see rock formations. Participants will enjoy a hike along a maintained trail with views of thick section of Challis volcanics. In this glaciated terrane, rocks are fresh and easy to see, and the complex structure of the mountains surround the area. Participants will each receive a geologic map of Idaho.
The 45-minute hike up Johnstone Creek Trail is easy to moderate, with a round-trip distance of approximately 2.5 miles and an elevation gain of 900 feet.

Driving directions:
Johnstone Creek Trailhead, meet at parking lot, intersection of East Fork Road and Highway 75
From Highway 75, turn onto East Fork Road and enter the parking lot at the intersection. From there we will shuttle as a group to the trail head with 4 stops along the way to view geological formations. We’ll drive out East Fork 5.5 miles. The road turns to dirt at little town of Triumph, where we’ll continue to a fork and make a sharp left onto an unmarked road, continuing to the Johnstone Creek trailhead.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Paul Link has taught geology at Idaho State University since 1980. He and graduate students worked extensively in the Sun Valley area as part of a USGS project from 1985 to 1993. Paul is a coauthor on the 2012 Idaho Geologic Map. He is a regional sedimentary geologist and has supervised more than 100 Master of Science theses at ISU.
